Good nutrition and learning go hand in hand.

The Nutrition Services department is made up of a team of food and nutrition professionals that are dedicated to students' health, well being and their ability to learn. We support learning by promoting healthy habits for lifelong nutrition and fitness practices.

Meals, foods and beverages sold or served at schools meet state and federal requirements which are based on the USDA Dietary Guidelines. We provide students with access to a variety of affordable and appealing foods that meet the health and nutrition needs of students.

The goal in the Department of Food Service is to offer nutritious meals for our school children to eat each day. Franklin County School cafeterias are staffed by professional nutrition specialists who want children to be regular customers.

We want to encourage students and adults to eat plenty of different fruits and vegetables. Diets rich in fruits and vegetables may reduce the risk of cancer and other chronic diseases. Fruits and vegetables, which are naturally low in fat and calories, provide essential vitamins and minerals, fiber, and other substances that are important for good health. We are serving school meals that meet tough new federal nutrition standards. Our division ensures that meals are healthy, well-balanced and provide students all the nutrition they need to succeed at school.

School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains.  Our meals meet strict limits for the following standards: saturated fat, low sodium, portion size and a variety of dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes.

Physical activity, along with a healthy diet, plays an important role in the prevention of obesity.  In order to maintain one's weight the amount of calories used should equal the amount of calories consumed. The body burns calories for everyday functions such as breathing, digestion, and leisure-time physical activities.  Keeping active in all aspects of life contributes to obesity prevention.

Again, I want to welcome you back to school and to the cafeterias where nutritious meals are prepared each day. Have a great year at your school and contact my office if you have questions or concerns.
